The time has finally come that all of us theater and Broadway lovers have waited for--the Tony nominations are finally here!!!!! This year will be a BIG year not only because the Tony's are celebrating 75 years, but it is the first year in two years its back at its home at Radio City Music Hall!
Below is the FULL LIST of nominations announced today. This year is going to be a nail bitter for sure!!
My thoughts: Ok, so I am not surprised by the shows and performers nominated for the most part. Most of who I and others thought would be nominated were. That said, there were a few things that I was surprised by. First off, what was with these nominations for Flying Over Sunset?? Really?? This was the worst show I think I've seen all season, and the critics also panned it. If they were going to give the nominations to a closed show, they should have given it to Diana: The Musical instead. Carmen Cusack is excellent, so that is fine, but I would have loved to have seen Jeana De Waal nominated for her role.
Another upset was Funny Girl not being nominated in the Best Revival category and Beanie Feldstein not getting a nomination. Personally, I was more surprised that Funny Girl was left out of the Best Revival category because of the magnitude and the anticipation of the revival. I also thought that Beanie would be nominated because of the leading lady aspect. However, I was not a fan of her performance, so I am glad that the voters made the right choice. Regardless, it's still an "upset," as many thought she and the show would be nominated!
