Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the book launch and special event for 13x Tony Award winning Broadway Producer, Carl Moellenberg for his new memoir Carl Moellenberg's Story: Broadway and Spirituality as a Path to Survival.
Carl's memoir explores his life and the extradinaotry ups and downs he has faced. From coming out as gay back in the late 80's, to discovering he was HIV positive in the height of the AIDS pandemic, the tumultuous and stressful time during his time in the finance industry, how his relationship with God and an awakening while in France led him on the path to Broadway and producing, and how he has gone on to produce on Broadway, AND in TV/Film.
A few of the shows that Carl has been part of the producing team on include HAIR, Company, Hadestown, The Bands Visit, Angels in America (2018 revival), PIPPIN, Dear Evan Hansen, and Spring Awakening (which was his first show he got involved in as a producer).
A really fun fact that we talk about is that Carl was one of the investors in the original production of WICKED, and by all accounts that show has paid him back HANDSOMELY over the last twenty years.
