My cheeks STILL hurt from laughing!
That’s how I felt walking out of Theatre 555 on Monday night after seeing the newest edition of Forbidden Broadway-"Merrily We Stole A Song", the 2024 addition of the side-splitting parody of our favorite shows from the past few years. The last Forbidden Broadway we saw was in 2020, shortly before the world, and Broadway shut down for the pandemic.
The show kicks off with a hilarious reworking of “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from Guys and Dolls—now cheekily transformed into “Sit Down, You’re Blocking the Aisle.” As soon as the cast belted out this opener, I knew I’d never hear that song the same way again. Next time someone’s in my way at the theater, I might just be tempted to start singing it myself!
For anyone who loves Broadway (and let's face it, who reading this doesn’t?), the magic of Forbidden Broadway is in how it lovingly pokes fun at the shows we hold dear. You can expect to see your favorite pandemic-era and post-pandemic musicals taken down a notch—SIX, The Outsiders, Company, Cabaret, The Great Gatsby, and so many more.
The energy is relentless, and the quick-change artists in this production deserve a standing ovation. They dart in and out of costumes, effortlessly becoming larger-than-life versions of Broadway stars we all know. By the end of the night, you’ll feel like you’ve seen an entire Broadway season, wrapped up in one delightfully devious package.
With its rapid-fire parodies and biting humor, Forbidden Broadway keeps us all laughing at the shows we pay big bucks to see, while also reminding us why we love them in the first place. And trust me, you don't need to be a Broadway expert to get the jokes—though if you are, you'll be in for some extra laughs.
This riotous revue is running through January 14, 2024, so make sure you don’t miss it! Grab your tickets at www.theatre555.com and get ready to leave with sore cheeks of your own. This is one you won’t want to miss—unless you’re afraid of laughing so hard you cry!
I can't wait to get back there again!
